What experience is needed for white water canoe?
You should have basic boat control on flat water before heading to the rapids. Being comfortable with fundamental strokes helps you master the technical flow and eddies of the river.
How does canoeing the Dart differ from kayaking?
Canoeing offers a unique perspective and requires different balance. While kayaks are lower down, the open canoe on the River Dart demands finer edge control and more strategic line choice.
What should I wear for my day out on the water?
In warmer weather, quick-drying gym gear or a wetsuit works well. Avoid cotton as it gets cold when wet. If you are joining us for moving water, a proper drysuit or thick neoprene is best.
Do you run sessions in cold weather or winter?
Yes, we coach year-round. Winter often provides the best river levels for white water. We just ask that you bring extra thermal layers and a hot drink to keep your energy up during the day.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer to join in?
You don't need to be an Olympic swimmer, but you should be confident in the water while wearing a buoyancy aid. Being comfortable if you take a swim is key for all our courses. We often use video analysis as a powerful coaching tool to help you see your technique and improve throughout the day.
Where do we park and are there local facilities?
Most of our River Dart sessions meet at locations with nearby parking and basic toilets. Once you book, we will send over a specific meeting point map and details on the closest facilities for your session. We can also provide a list of recommended local campsites, B&Bs, and hotels near the river for your stay.
How do I start working towards a Paddle UK White Water Leader award?
The best first step is to build solid personal paddling skills on Grade 2-3 water and get some coaching on river reading and safety. Once you feel confident, we can help you plan a clear pathway of courses and river days that lead towards your Paddle UK White Water Leader training and assessment.
What Paddle UK leader pathway is right for me?
Paddle UK offers different leadership awards for sheltered water, white water, and open water. If you tell us about your current experience and where you want to lead, we can recommend the best starting point and suggest a mix of coaching, personal paddling, and leadership days to get you there.
How many river days do I need before a leader assessment?
There is no fixed number, but you should have plenty of recent days on the type of water you want to lead, in a range of levels and conditions. We will always give you honest feedback on whether you are ready for assessment or would benefit from more consolidation first.
Can you help me plan a full Paddle UK leader journey?
Yes. We regularly support paddlers from their first skills course right through to successful Paddle UK leader assessments. Get in touch with Darren to chat about your current level, your goals, and a realistic timeline so we can map out a clear, enjoyable pathway together.
What other rivers around Dartmoor do you coach on?
Although the River Dart is our main playground, we also coach on other South West rivers when levels and logistics are right. Popular options include the Tavy, Plym, and Exe. If you have a favourite stretch in mind, let us know and weāll see if it fits your course aims and conditions.
Can you run a bespoke course for our canoe or kayak club?
Yes, we regularly work with clubs to deliver tailored coaching days and weekends. Tell us about your group size, experience range, and preferred dates, and we can design a session that matches your goals on the Dart or other local rivers.
Do you offer group discounts for club bookings?
For larger club groups, we can often offer a reduced per-person rate, depending on numbers and the type of course. Get in touch with your ideal dates, venue, and aims, and weāll put together a clear quote for your team.
Can you help our club plan a full Dartmoor paddling weekend?
Absolutely. We can advise on river options, likely levels for the time of year, and suitable venues for your aims. Weāre also happy to suggest local accommodation and help you build a realistic, fun weekend plan for your club on and around the Dart.
